Engineering Mechanics
The bachelor course provides students basic knowledge on mechanics of rigid solids. Three main parts are covered
Statics is about equilibrium.
- Students can simplify a system of multiple forces into an equivalent system with two components: a resultant force vector and a resultant moment vector. acting at a chosen point.
- Students can draw the free body diagram.
- Students can calculate reaction forces.
The leaning tower of Lire: Why does it not fall? Center of gravity can explain!
Kinematics describes the motion of points, single bodies and system of bodies, without considering the cause of motion (e.g. forces and torques)- Students can determine the vector of acceleration, vector of velocity and the trajectory of points.
- Students can determine the motion of points within a rigid body in general planar motion.
- Students can derive the equations of motion for a system of one or two degrees of freedom, using the following methods: D’Alembert’s principle, Principle of virtual work, Lagrangian method.
Theory of Elasticity
The bachelor course provides students basic knowledge on mechanics of deformable solids.
After the course, students can do the followings
- Perform calculation on strain tensor and stress tensor
- Apply the Hooke’s law for linear elasticity of isotropic materials
- Apply the Airy stress method to solve 2D linear elastic problems.
- Apply the analytical method for thin plates analysis using Kirchhoff theory.
Mechanical Behavior of Materials
The bachelor course provides students knowledge on the relation between strain and stress in deformable solids.
- Students can apply Hooke’s law for linear elasticity of isotropic and orthotropic materials.
- Students can distinguish different types of non-linear behaviors.
- Students can apply Newton-Raphson method for solving non-linear solid mechanics problems.
- Students can apply the Return-mapping for elastic-plastic problems.
- Students can apply the basic Rule of Mixture for fiber reinforced composite materials.
